Maerklin introduced the Am 847 as a one-off limited production run for the year 2002. The model is of course based on the V100 introduced by Maerklin to the mini-club range only one year earlier.

All Sersa Am 847s are given female names. Maerklin's mini-club model is Gretli II.

To give the Am 847 something to pull, Maerklin also offered a separate set consisiting of 5 Sersa liveried civil engineering rolling stock (82517).

The private rail infrastructure company Sersa AG, which was founded in 1947 and has its headquarters located in Z¸rich, is the owner of one of the largest diesel motive power fleets in Switzerland. All locomotives come from second-hand purchases made mostly in Germany.

The class Am 847 locomotives are ex-DB (German Federal Railways) class V 100 (BR 212) locomotives built in 1961-62 by Krauss-Maffei. With the exception of one locomotive, all Am 847s (bought in the early 1990s) carry the standard Sersa livery of overall white with horizontal orange stripe midway.

These locomotives can be seen all over the Swiss rail network on infrastructure trains consisiting of civil engineeering and special purpose stock owned by Sersa AG.
