Throughout the decades, Marvel Comics has offered its readers uncountable amazing stories of suspense, fantasy and mystery. But the stories behind these stories are just as fascinating and intriguing as the tales in the comic books themselves.

Why was Marvel's superhero concept such a smash hit in the 1960s and why did it change the comic book industry forever?

Which circumstances changed the industry again in the early 1970s and made Marvel turn to horror and fantasy?

What made Tomb of Dracula the classic comic book of its genre?

The expansion of the Marvel Universe after its "big bang" in 1961, triggered by Fantastic Four #1, is a fascinating story in its own right, and there are enough first hand sources available to see and understand what really happened and what the editors, writers and artists involved in the creation of these comic books thought about their work and wanted to achieve.

Comic books have only become the subject of academic studies fairly recently, but today they're covered in a steadily growing number of publications. This website traces some of the stories behind the Marvel Comics phenomenon in an academic approach with regard to the soundness of source background information, but tries to avoid an all too top-heavy perspective on the subject. After all, Marvel comic books are for fun, and the insight offered here is only intended to add to this fun.
